To ensure safe reopening of schools we are working on the provision of hand washing facilities with 10.000 litres water storage tanks and provision of soap.Training of schools’ committees, local communities, and school staff on Covid 19 messaging in line with government guidelines. We we have supported provision of handwashing stations and training in more than 800 communities.
Although much progress has been made, 64% of the population still lacks access to a safe water source near their home and 77% don’t have access to sanitation facilities. Women and girls bear the burden of walking more than 5 kilometres to queue for hours at water points. The alternative is to take water from rivers or uncovered shallow wells and scoop holes which exposes families to high risk of waterborne diseases. The Mozambique Humanitarian Response Plan for 2021 cited water and sanitation facilities as inadequate and already over-stretched and prioritizes the establishment of water across the country
We train local young men and women to dig and drill wells and install Afridev pumps. We rehabilitate damaged and broken pumps. We test the water is fit to drink – we have a water quality testing laboratory, well equipped with modern testing kits. Results are certified by an independent verifier. We set up and train water committees on how to maintain and service their water points. To date 9300 people have been trained and more than 900 water committees have been set-up.
Installation of solar powered water systems with header tanks linked to taps and toilet blocks.
Construction of school latrines including disability adaptations & solar lit shower rooms.
Schools and community’s hygiene and sanitation awareness training including menstrual health. One school we supported has more than 9000 students
We gather data on the reduction in CO2 emissions once households no longer use wood to make their water safe to drink, improving air quality and reducing environmental impacts. We are monitoring almost 900 communities, continuing to check functionality, water quality and CO2 emissions for at least 5 years
We need to scale up our work by reaching more left-behind communities and schools within Manica Province and extend our reach into neighbouring Sofala Province. Both of these areas have been hard hit by worsening cyclones since 2019, with villages and schools devastated, including their WASH facilities.
